Registry Lock

A registry lock provides the highest level of protection for a domain name and ensures your domain names do not get hijacked. This “out-of-band” step protects against automation errors and system compromises.

Registry-level locking of domains provides additional levels of authentication between the Registry and the registrar of the domain name.

Verification Process

If an end customer requests a change to a Registry Locked domain, an authorised individual must submit a request to Melbourne IT to unlock the domain name.

If any changes need to be made to a registry locked domain name, including modifying DNS records, changing ownership or registrar transfers, a stringent verification process takes place involving:

  • Melbourne IT checking your security passphrase
  • The registry checking our internal security passphrase
  • Once approved, the domain will be unlocked for 48 hours then automatically relocked.

This three-way check between the domain registrant (you), the registrar (us) and the registry ensures that no unauthorised changes can be made to your domain name.
